Agile Scrum FAQ
Agile refers to a flexible approach of organization, allowing businesses to respond more effectively and quickly to a changing world and customer needs. This is achieved by creating customer-focused teams that develop (partial) products and services in short cycles, typically less than a month, and regularly align with customers. As a result, organizations deliver products and services that closely match current customer demands, while employees experience greater job satisfaction.
With Agile you can respond more quickly to changes and you already deliver value to your customers during the development of products or services through the interim delivery of (part) products. This at the same time reduces the risk that the products or services you develop do not match customer needs.
By working Agile, you connect as well as possible to the changing needs of your customer. This makes Agile most effective when you develop complex products or services for rapidly changing markets.
Agile working is most useful if the end goal is not yet completely determined. For process and repetitive work, it is more convenient to create efficient procedures. At the same time, this prevents possible risks if you do it incorrectly.
Agile is a vision to continue to deliver competitive value in rapidly changing markets. Scrum is a way to put that vision into practice. The concepts Agile(2001) and Scrum(1986) were devised independently of each other and by different people.
Both methods put the customer first. Scrum is a way to actually put the vision of Agile working into practice and focuses on: delivering the highest customer value in the shortest possible time. Within Scrum there is a clear division of roles, there are fixed meetings and work is done in short cycles of a number of weeks called sprints. A timebox is the maximum time that a meeting may last. Most meetings within Scrum are time-boxed, so everyone knows in advance how long the meeting will last and therefore feels more concise.
Prior to the start of each sprint, the sprint planning meeting determines what will be achieved during a sprint, how that will be done and who will do it. This is done by the Scrum team members in close consultation with the customer’s representative, the Scrum Product Owner.
A short daily meeting of up to 15 minutes between the scrum team members in which each of the team members shares: what they have completed, what they are going to finish and whether they run into something that needs to be solved. The meeting often takes place standing so that it has an active form and does not take too long.
At the end of the sprint, the products and services that have been completed are demonstrated to the Scrum Product Owner in the Sprint Review meeting. As the direct representative of the customer, the Product Owner is the person who approves or rejects the demonstrated products.
Scrum teams want to continuously improve themselves. During the Scrum Retrospective at the end of the sprint, the scrum team members give each other feedback about what they thought went well and what they thought went less well. This retrospective improves the performance of a Scrum team over time.
